Greener Pastures Recovery’s Story (GPR)

Transforming Lives Through Hope and Connection

No one arrives in prison, jail, or rehab on a winning streak.

Yet at Greener Pastures Recovery (GPR), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we’ve witnessed countless lives transformed over the past decade, we see the miracle happen all the time.

Through Christ-centered, secular, and evidence-based programs we guide individuals in Colorado and New Mexico correctional and rehab facilities from despair to lasting recovery and purpose.

Led by GPR Director and CR Inside Colorado State Ambassador Bill Orthwein, alongside 6 committed CRI Regional State Ambassadors, and 85 trained CRI Volunteers, we deliver 90+ weekly recovery meetings across 60+ facilities.

Each week, we reach around 1,000+ individuals, providing in the ballpark of 50,000 inmate hours of transformative programming annually to combat addiction and mental health challenges.

Our Mission: From Hopelessness to Freedom

GPR empowers incarcerated individuals to overcome addiction and rebuild lives of purpose through:

  • Celebrate Recovery Inside (CRI): A Christ-centered, inclusive program blending Biblical Beatitudes with secular 12-steps to heal life’s hurts, hang-ups, and habits.  Open to all, CRI’s structured approach reduces recidivism and connects inside participants once released to the 30,000+ global fellowships meeting weekly on the outside for post-release support. Though faith based, CRI yields prolific secular benefits, enjoyed by all faith walks, i.e. personal development, emotional healing, supportive community, connnection.
  • Journal Your Journey: A secular journaling program leveraging neuroplasticity to foster mental health and reentry readiness.
  • Recovery/Reentry Coaching: Personalized peer support for sobriety and community reintegration.
  • Motivational Speaking: Inspiring talks on recovery and resilience, tailored for faith-based or secular audiences, behind bars and in the free world.

Our Commitment: Free Access for All

Thanks to our generous donors, all GPR programs, materials and services are free, ensuring universal access to life-changing recovery support in prisons, jails, halfway houses, and rehab centers.

The Power of Celebrate Recovery Inside

Celebrate Recovery Inside (CRI), a cornerstone of our prison ministry, is a Christ-centered, radically inclusive 12-step program open to all—regardless of faith, culture, or identity. By blending Biblical principles with secular strategies, CRI fosters emotional healing, personal growth, and community.

  • Reducing Recidivism: While precise recidivism and relapse rates are hard to track due to the transient nature of released individuals and inconsistent reporting, national rates often exceed 50% for inmate recidivism and 80% for rehab grad relapse.
  • But the trend is clear: CRI programming helps lower these rates, delivering hope, stability, and community.
  • Proven Impact: Now recognized as a First Step Act Productive Activity by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), inmates taking CRI in federal prisons across the country can earn 15 days off their sentence, per month that they attend our program.
  • Prison chaplains have estimated that CRI inside graduates, who continue CR post-release, are far less likely to return to prison, (10X).
  • Endorsed Excellence: Former Prison Fellowship CEO James Ackerman called CRI “the top existing program in place across the country for successful inmate reentry,” while talking to POTUS in the White House-affirming its transformative power at the highest levels.

    Impact Stories: Lives Transformed

  • At ADX, the "Alcatraz of the Rockies," Praise Church's Pastor Rob Reyes, recently honored as Volunteer of the Year, regularly unites Muslim, Buddhist, Native American, Christian, and other inmates through CRI’s recovery program. In those settings he meets people where they are by leaning into the more secular 12-step framework, rather than Scripture.  Pastor Reyes fosters accountability, hope, and growth, creating common ground in a supermax setting. His approach proves recovery transcends boundaries, enabling connection and healing among inmates in near-total solitary confinement, from all backgrounds and faith walks. Remarkably, Reyes has seen former ADX CRI participants, once fully shackled, now released, new lives blossoming, regularly attending Praise Church CR meetings and Sunday services, staying connected with their Pastor by speed dial.
  • Northeast New Mexico Correctional (NENM): Over 200 men—one-third of the prison—have completed CRI’s 25-lesson Step Study. In the advanced class, the Journey Continues, 45 men closed the meeting by reciting the long version of the Serenity Prayer, like they were saying their ABC's, with joy and unity under Pastor Joey Trevino’s leadership.
  • Denver County Jail: In seven months, volunteers Jeff and Erv had 90 women surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.
  • Jeffco County Jail: Volunteers Chris, McKlaire, Cathy, and Kelly have guided women to thrive post-release, with five now flourishing in Celebrate Recovery meetings at Grace Church Arvada on the outside.
  • Garfield County Jail: In 2015, founders Bill Orthwein and Darren Quintenz (d. 2024) led CRI at Garfield County Jail. One Friday, after a jail closure, they joined the Rifle church CR meeting, 8 familiar faces—former inmates in orange jumpsuits—greeted them warmly, 4 of them now CR Ministry Leaders 10 years later, thriving in Colorado’s prison-to-community recovery.
  • Marlene and Michelle at Denver Women's Correctional are averaging 18 participants/week, with many Satisfied Customers attending CR on the outside now after 2 years of programming.
  • Major Itule, NE Colorado CRI State Ambassador, has inside meetings running multiple times of the day, 7 days a week.
  • Cheryl, volunteer from Weld and Larimer jails, captured it perfectly-sharing at our recent Statewide CR Quarterly Meeting, “this is just all so, so crazy good!”
  • This happens all the time.

CRI participants, once released from incarceration or rehab,  continue their journey in the 30,000+ welcoming Celebrate Recovery groups worldwide in the outside free world.

 Our Challenge: Scaling Impact

Over 120 facilities await GPR’s programs, but we need your help to grow.

Just $500–$1,000 per facility annually covers resources and travel, bringing hope to thousands more.

As a fully independent nonprofit, separate from the national CR team and Saddleback Church, we rely on individual donors (96%) and Colorado churches (4%).  We are applying for grants from organizations like Caring for Denver Alternatives to Jail, and Colorado Health Foundation.

Our Impact and Need

Now reaching 62 facilities across Colorado and New Mexico, Greener Pastures Recovery (GPR) empowers thousands with faith based, secular, and evidence-based programs that reduce recidivism and foster hope.

Yet, this is an ongoing expense, and over 120 facilities need our programs and services.

That is our goal.

Each facility needs $500–$1,000 annually for essential resources to deliver programming.

In 2024, GPR invested $11,000 in books and materials through CR/Pastors Store, total expenses with our Publisher will reach $30,000 by year’s end.

All this is funded by individual donors (96%) and Colorado churches (4%).

We need your help.

To expand our reach, we’ve applied for the Caring for Denver’s Alternatives to Jail grant and plan to pursue funding from the Colorado Health Foundation and Denver Foundation.

Coach

Bill Orthwein is the Director/Recovery Coach for Greener Pastures Recovery (GPR), a 501c3 Public Charity whose main purpose is to fund/run Christ-centered and secular recovery programming inside prisons/jails/rehabs, and to assist inmates/patients on the inside and individuals on the outside break free from the bondage of addictive behavior.

Our Founder’s Story of Recovery
From Addiction to Leading Colorado’s Prison Ministry
Bill Orthwein, GPR’s Director, knows the depths of addiction firsthand.

After five failed rehabs, six hip surgeries, and a life-threatening bone infection, he hit rock bottom in Costa Rica, surviving a 50-foot waterfall fall in 2010.

In that moment, Bill prayed, promising God he’d serve if spared.

Miraculously, on his 51st birthday, a final surgery in Dallas eradicated the infection, saving his leg and life.

Guided by faith, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Cornerstone Christian Center in Basalt, Colorado, Bill embraced sobriety and discovered Celebrate Recovery (CR).

Inspired by biblical truths and CRI’s mission, he began serving inmates, becoming Colorado State Representative for Celebrate Recovery Inside in 2015.

In 2021, he founded Greener Pastures Recovery (GPR), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to fund faith-based and secular addiction recovery programs in prisons, jails, and rehabs.

Greener Pastures Recovery operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, fully self-funded and unaffiliated with Saddleback Church, the National Celebrate Recovery Team, or any religious denominations.

We are funded thru private donations (96%) and churches (4%).

Thank you individual donors, and Cornerstone Christian Center, Mid Valley Baptist, SJ Lutheran/Wash Park for your incredible generosity!

GPR is in the process of applying for grants to continue/expand our impact.

Bill’s journey fuels GPR’s mission to offer hope, reentry coaching, and mental health support, transforming lives through connection.

What People Are Saying:

Brian Strickland

Behind the Walls & Inside-Out Ministries, Denver, Colorado

"I have known Bill for several years now and I can honestly say that there is nobody besides Jesus Christ that has had a more profound effect on my life than Greener Pastures Recovery and Bill Orthwein.  Bill got me my first job, had me doing a lot of daily tasks to help me in my recovery like keeping a journal where I wrote out my objectives, my achievements, and goals for the future. Greener Pastures Recovery is called of God and the ministry will change your life if you let it."

Mark Pauck
All Things Hydrolic, Detroit, Michigan

"Without Greener Pastures Recovery and Bill in my life, his guidance and friendship, I would not be alive writing this today. He was the backbone of my recovery- it was his constant coaching and follow-up that made the difference. He got me to start writing in a journal. I was skeptical. I am not the “type” of person that journals. But I have so much respect for Bill and his transformation, that I decided to try it.  Journaling My Journey, along with constant heartfelt prayer, changed my life. I know that Bill has the skills, will, passion and grace to help change and save other people’s lives. He is truly blessed."

Joadie Griebel
Professional Cleaning/Red Seas Ministries, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

"Bill Orthwein lives and breathes to help other people succeed. He didn't just become a success story and continue with his own life. Bill has dedicated his life to go back and pull others out the fire and help as many people as he can out of drug addiction, alcoholism and brokenness and show them that all things are possible to those who believe! I have seen Bill pursue people, encourage them to move forward regardless of their situation, and because of Bill's influence in their lives they have become some of the most successful people I know today in the community. He would call to continually to encourage me, and push me to not give up. Bill was probably the number one reason why I did not give up and pursued my legal situation and got the victory! Because of that my life is forever changed now."

John Leahy
Co-Owner The Ridge Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

"Bill Orthwein, Director of Greener Pastures Recovery, has been my Recovery Coach since January of 2022 after leaving The Ridge Ohio Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center, where I am co-owner. His positive influence has made recovery, step work, and conversations of Faith a fun, joyous, and life changing experience. I would never have thought that possible. Bill's insistence on Journaling My Journey has had a tremendous impact on my getting and keeping traction-another surprise. 270 days later, I am not the same person and am truly living happy, joyous and free."

Mary Himes
Colorado Celebrate Recovery State Representative, Colorado Springs, Colorado

"Bill has done an excellent job in his capacity as State Representative for Celebrate Recovery Inside. He lives in Denver and travels all over the state giving his testimony and recruiting volunteers to go into the prisons and jails to lead CR programs inside, as well as to lead the crucial CR Step Studies. He has exhibited an enthusiasm to reach the hurting and broken that has far exceeded anyone I have ever met. He has such a humble, teachable servant’s heart that is rare to find."

Dan Blankenship
Transportation/CEO Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, Aspen, Colorado

"In the summer of 2016, Bill invited me serve as a volunteer at the Garfield County Jail, to help lead Celebrate Recovery classes (a Christ-Centered 12-Step program) for inmates. With Bill as my mentor and teaching partner, the experience has been very fulfilling for me. Celebrate Recovery classes have helped me to understand that drug and alcohol abuse and addiction are pervasive and play major roles in the behaviors that cause the vast majority of inmates to be incarcerated. Celebrate Recovery provides inmates struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction hope that through the redemptive power that comes through faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they can ultimately break free of the hurts, hang ups, and habits that have robbed them of the joyful, peaceful, productive, and honorable lives that God has planned for them.

Not content to share the message of hope, healing, restoration, and redemption with just the inmates in the Garfield County Jail, Bill's passion to help others and his commitment to serve Jesus Christ, have inspired him to introduce Celebrate Recovery in prisons, jails and rehabs across Colorado."
